BEA Recap: Day 1 + Giveaway!

Check out part 1 of my BEA Recap: Blogger Con!

The first day of BEA began early for me. I had read plenty of tip posts before going and had decided to go as early as possible to start queueing up inside the Javits to get into the exhibition hall. I got to the Javits around seven and settled in for my two hour wait. I managed to keep myself occupied with the Publishers Weekly daily handout. As soon as it turned nine the exhibit hall opened and I was so freaking excited!!

The line was already crazy when I arrived!

It wasn't quite the mad rush that I expected when entering the hall. I headed straight for the Penguin booth and managed to grab one or two galleys I was interested in before making my way around all of the booths. One of the things I learned immediately was that you almost definitely won't stick to your plan! I was really cautious about planning, in case I was waiting too long in lines or there were galley drops, so I only highlighted two signings each day that I had to attend. Everything else would be more of a see-what-happens schedule. The first signing I had planned for Thursday was immediately scrapped after I released Harper Collins would be having a drop of the book, with two others that I really wanted, at the same time as the signing. This freed up so much time for me and I managed to get to other galley drops and a couple of signings that I wouldn't have been able to attend while I was lining up for the original signing I wanted to attend.

The rest of the day was so hectic! I felt like I didn't stop for even a  minute! I wandered around for the day and got so many books! I got more books in the first hour and a half of BEA than I did at any other stage of the event! I had to drop books into my suitcase at 10:30, I had a carry-on suitcase with me and it was filled with this first drop! All of these were books that I really wanted and was excited for so it's not like I was grabbing everything handed to me, I actually said no to so many books!

I found out that there would be a drop for The Iron Trial by Holly Black and Cassandra Clare at two and so made sure to start lining up at one. There were already people in line by then! It was in this line that I met some of my favourite bloggers, I was so excited! I met Octavia from Read. Sleep. Repeat, Nikki from There Were Books Involved, Kelly from Effortlessly Reading and Anya from On Starships and Dragonwings. I love these blogs and it was so amazing getting to meet these bloggers. We had fun while waiting and ended up getting the ARCs early because the woman at the booth could see how eager we were!

Octavia, Nikki and I then decided to head over early to the signing for Trial by Fire by Josephine Angelini. She wouldn't begin signing for and hour and twenty minutes but we thought we might as well get started early! We asked could we start the line but we were told the line wouldn't start until fifteen minutes beforehand. So we told her we'd just with there until then and we start out not-a-line-circle around a bin! We had so much fun and Valerie from Stuck in Books joined us. We had a bit of trouble when a someone managed to get a whiteboard and said they were starting the line for the signing but the woman in charge of the signing line made sure we got to go to the signing first since she knew how long we'd been waiting!

I was invited to the YA Author/Blogger party and so left early, and by early I mean about half an hour before it was supposed to close. I didn't think I had brought anything to wear to the party so I dropped off my books and left to go to H&M in Times Square so I could get something to wear. When trying stuff on I sat down for a second to take my shoes off and realised this was my first time sitting down all day!! I had literally not sat down since I was waiting in line that morning! My feet were killing me! Unfortunately I had to make a trip to Walgreens to get plasters and this walk took me about ten minutes. It was about a ten second walk from H&M! The walk back to the hotel nearly killed me but I managed it somehow. After all of that I ended up wearing a dress I had brought with me! Seriously I'm going to wrap my feet in bandages next year!

I managed to make it to the party even though my taxi driver didn't have a clue where we were going! I had to use the last of my data to look the address up on google maps! When I arrived I couldn't believe how gorgeous the building was, talk about fancy! When we arrive we were given a name tag, raffle tickets and a bingo card. The bingo card was such a great ice breaker as we went around trying to find people who matched the criteria to fill each box. Some of the people we had to find was "someone who has read a book today" and "someone who has had five books published". Luckily someone pointed me in the direction of Jennifer L. Armentrout for the second one! The raffle tickets were so exciting as there was a lot of amazing prizes on offer but the prize everyone wanted was the copy of Isla and the Happily Ever After by Stephanie Perkins. I seriously just walked up and touched it and got excited! It was such a fun party with so many incredible people. I got to meet a few of my favourite bloggers, and I'm not going to lie, I was more excited to meet some of them than I was the authors I've fangirled over for years! I got to meet Brittany from The Book Addict's Guide, Alexa from Alexa Loves Books, Katelyn from Kate's Tales of Books and Bands, Kat and Steph from Cuddlebuggery. I also got to meet the wonderful host of the party Liza who runs Who R U Blog and I got to say a quick hello to Hannah from The Irish Banana who had helped me with firguring out a few things for BEA. It turned out I was staying at the same hotel as Jamie from The Perpetual Page-Turner and April from Good Books and Good Wine so we got a taxi home together. I have to admit I had a total inner fangirl moment when I got to meet Jamie!

I had such an amazing time at the party! I didn't stay as long as I would have liked though because, of course, I had BEA in the morning to get up early for!

Make sure to check back again on Tuesday for part 3 of my recap and to hear all about my second day at BEA! Plus more giveaways!

  1. I loved meeting you!! I wish we had figured we were in the same hotel earlier so we could have hung out more!! NEXT YEAR. (because YOU WILL come back!!)

  2. You're so right: things never go quite according to plan at BEA. You were smart to plan for only a few MUST HAVE signings a day and see how it went from there. And it's crazy how much running around a person can do there and not even realize it. I'm always beyond spent when the day ends which is a shame because NYC is filled with fun stuff to do but you're just too tired to do much of it >.< Anyways I loved looking at all your lovely pictures and reading about your BEA adventures :D Thanks for sharing ^^

  3. Ohhhh you make me so excited to go! I can't wait for next year and imdef won't plan to to much at once. Hope I get to meet all you lovelies!

  4. AHHHHHHH I wish I could come to BEA in the future, it's so far from my country and seems so impossible. :( You looked like you had so much fun!!!

  5. Wow! That sounds like so much. I've been to an event (RT Book Convention) where I was on my feet for the longest time and when I got to sit down it was amazing. Glad you had a lot of fun! I can't wait for when I'll be able to attend a BEA event.

  6. I read and love The Scorpio Races and can't wait to read Sinner! Thanks for this great giveaway!

  7. Ha ha, I've never seen that picture of me at BEA before! -hides-
Anyways, I'm glad you had a great time Jenni and it was SO nice to meet you! :D
And you definitely did a WAY better job than me in taking pictures - I had to cram taking pictures in the last few hours. ;D

  8. I will DEFINITELY be back! There's no way I could miss BEA after getting to experience it this year! And I promise I won't fall asleep when it comes time to get ice cream next year. We'll definitely have to meet up!

  9. You seriously just have no energy to do anything at all after BEA. I think I'm going to try to schedule some time in before BEA next year for some fun stuff! My pleasure, thanks for commenting!

  10. I would recommend saving all year just to go. No matter what it takes it's pretty worth it! Definitely hope to see you there next year!

  11. I'm from Ireland myself so it was a bit more expensive than it would have been for bloggers from the US or Canada, but I really have to say it's worth saving all year for! Hopefully someday you get to go!

  12. My absolute pleasure! Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

  13. Hopefully you'll get to go in the next year or so. Even if you have to start saving now for 2016 then it's totally worth it!

  14. I have The Scorpio Races but never got around to reading it, I'm going to have to move it up the pile! No problem!

  15. You look so pretty though! I loved meeting you at BEA :D I managed to remember a few times to take pictures so I was lucky. Definitely going to take more next year though!

  16. I didn't have the chance to go to BEA this year, but I really want to go next year!
I know that I'm going to sound like a total newbie for asking this, but how did you get so many books and find out about the drops? Is there a schedule for drops or do you just go to the different booths and hope to get lucky?
