The Best of BEA: Simon & Schuster!

For the next week or so leading up to BEA I will be featuring bloggers telling us about the ARCs they are most looking foward to getting their hands on, and publishers telling us which ARCs we should be on the lookout for! Today Sarah Jane from Simon & Schuster will be telling us the two galleys by Simon & Schuster to make sure to grab this year!

Afterworlds by Scott Westerfeld

Darcy Patel has put college on hold to publish her teen novel, Afterworlds. With a contract in hand, she arrives in New York City with no apartment, no friends, and all the wrong clothes. But lucky for Darcy, she’s taken under the wings of other seasoned and fledgling writers who help her navigate the city and the world of writing and publishing. Over the course of a year, Darcy finishes her book, faces critique, and falls in love.
Woven into Darcy’s personal story is her novel, Afterworlds, a suspenseful thriller about a teen who slips into the “Afterworld” to survive a terrorist attack. The Afterworld is a place between the living and the dead, and where many unsolved—and terrifying—stories need to be reconciled. Like Darcy, Lizzie too falls in love…until a new threat resurfaces, and her special gifts may not be enough to protect those she cares about most.

Realistic fiction, contemporary romance, smart high concept, ‘lightly’ paranormal thriller, Scott Westerfeld’s newest has something for every reader. As always, Westerfeld writes about topical, smart subjects. The explosion of young successful writers – particularly of teen books (like Veronica Roth) is on teens' minds. Afterworlds, the novel within the novel, is a light paranormal in the tradition of Lisa McMann’s books. It’s super accessible and will appeal to fans of suspense, thriller, and supernatural.

Black Ice by Becca Fitzpatrick

Brit Pheiffer has trained to backpack the Teton Range, but she isn’t prepared when her ex-boyfriend, who still haunts her every thought, wants to join her. Before Britt can explore her feelings for Calvin, an unexpected blizzard forces her to seek shelter in a remote cabin, accepting the hospitality of its two very handsome occupants—but these men are fugitives, and they take her hostage.
Britt is forced to guide the men off the mountain, and knows she must stay alive long enough for Calvin to find her. The task is made even more complicated when Britt finds chilling evidence of a series of murders that have taken place there…and in uncovering this, she may become the killer’s next target.
But nothing is as it seems, and everyone is keeping secrets, including Mason, one of her kidnappers. His kindness is confusing Britt. Is he an enemy? Or an ally?
Black Ice is New York Times bestselling author Becca Fitzpatrick’s riveting romantic thriller set against the treacherous backdrop of the mountains of Wyoming. Falling in love should never be this dangerous…

After her enormous success with the paranormal, Becca is transitioning into contemporary. But she hasn't left behind any of the darkness, mystery, or suspense. Black Ice is a thriller that will leave you on the edge of your seat and guessing until the end. But the true hallmark of Becca is still there, a sizzling romance between our heroine and a mysterious guy.
